ARCHIVE NEWS  - 2018

End of season review

Well, here we are at the end of another season. Thank you to all the players and the committee for making this another enjoyable year.

On the club front, we have seen a slight increase to 30 members. We hope the new members have enjoyed their first year with us! A very enjoyable social event was held in August, with Ian Rigby becoming the first winner of the Tony Nield trophy. This weekend saw the staging of the Wilbraham Cup with Peter Winnington winning the trophy and Sam Tomkinson won the plate event.

In the Mid-Cheshire League, after a slow start the team came third in the league behind Helsby B and Castle S&SC C. This is the second year of coming third in Division 4 - hopefully we can go at least one better next year. Top bowler, Sam Tomkinson was second in the league averages, with second place Peter Bellis, 4th in the league. Crowton had 5 players in the top fifteen - well done everyone.

In Norley Evening league, the team finished  6th in the league, with Mike Dale our top bowler.

The Norley Afternoon team could not quite do enough to prevent the wooden spoon. We came 12th, with Barbara Winnington, top bowler and 10th in the league. Despite the final result, the highlight of the year was probably the away win at Mobberley Victory Hall, when we only lost one chalk!

The Runcorn League continued to be good fun and although we again managed to come bottom of the league, on an individual basis, most players improved and 4 players were within the top 35 of the league averages. We took part in the Murphy Cup and several players competed in both the Abel Cup and the Tudor Pairs. John Coats made the semi-final of the Abel Cup, knocking out two League 1 players in the process. In the Tudor Pairs, John and Maggie made the semi-final, beating two pairs from Division 1 - Pavilions.

Thank you to all the members for your support and to Brian Hughes for his continued support throughout the season. See you all next year.

Wilbraham Cup

13 members took part in the Wilbraham Cup on Sunday 23rd September 2018.  Losers of the first and second round were then entered into the plate event.  The semi-finals of the Wilbraham Cup was contested by Peter Winnington against John Coats and Maggie Coats against Peter Bellis, with Peter Winnington and Maggie Coats winning through to the final. After a closely contested match, Peter emerged the victor, winning 15-14.

In the Plate, the semi-finals were between Sam Tomkinson and Phil Sidebotham, and Jeff Henton and Will Daynes. In the final, Sam beat  Jeff to pick up the cup.

Abel Cup result

Thursday 23rd August was final's night for the Abel Cup at Subscription Bowling Club in Runcorn.

John Coats was drawn against Neal Ocego in the semi-final and despite racing to a 11-0 lead, Neal was the winner - 21-13. In the other semi-final, Halton RBL's Mike Ellison was knocked out by Kevin Duncalf - 21-19.

The final saw Neal win 21-8 and retain the Abel Cup for the third year.

Wilbraham Cup  - Sunday 23rd September 2018

The Wilbraham Cup is a knockout competition for individual players. It is open to all members of the club and will take place on Sunday 23rd September 2018. Any players losing their first round match will be entered into the Plate competition. If you are interested in playing, please let John or Maggie Coats know.

Ian Rigby is the first winner of the Tony Nield Trophy

The second annual social event took place at a damp Crowton on 19th August 2018.  The main event was the inaugural competition for the Tony Nield Trophy, in which nineteen bowlers took part in a "round robin" pairs event, where you played with a different partner each round. It was a very close result, with the winner, Ian Rigby scoring 26, just one point ahead of a pack of three players, Peter Bellis, Mike Ellams and Sam Tomkinson. Mike was awarded second place with the best aggregate score of the chasing pack - 15. Congratulations to Ian, who is seen here receiving his trophy from Chairman, Peter Bellis.

Managing the results for the Tony Nield Cup 2018

A huge "Thank you" to Jeff Henton for preparing numerous spreadsheets to cope with different numbers of players and actually running the event.  Well done Jeff, it ran like clockwork.

Thank you to everyone who brought food for the excellent buffet or prizes for the raffle. As a result of the support from everyone we raised £52 for the Club.

Thanks also to Runcorn team member, Andrew Nixon, who let us use one of his crazy golf courses for the day, to keep the children of all ages occupied!!!

It was another enjoyable, friendly event, with good food, good bowling and lovely people.

Five go off to the Abel Cup

Five of the Runcorn League team took part in the Abel Cup competition tonight, Thursday 9th August 2018. Phil Sidebotham and Maggie Coats were at Halton RBL, where the draw pitted the two team members against each other, guaranteeing at least one Crowton player in the last eight. Phil beat Maggie 21-19, but then lost to Kevin Duncalf. John Drake, Peter Bellis and John Coats were at the Grapes, where John Coats won three matches to get to the finals night, playing Diane Worthington in the preliminary match to get to the first round and then beating Mark Winnington and John Briggs to set up a date in the last four of the competition at Subscription on Thursday 23rd August.  John will be up against Mike Ellison (Halton RBL), current holder Neal Ocego (Pavilions) and Kevin Duncalf (Norley).  Good Luck John and thank you to all five players in representing Crowton at this competition.

Social Event - Sunday 19th August 2018

On 19th August 2018, we are hosting our second annual social event. The day will start at 11.00am and will consist of a "round robin" pairs competition, followed by an informal presentation and buffet.  The event is open to all members, friends and families and is free to enter, but it would be appreciated if each person would bring something for the buffet. Maggie and Terry are co-ordinating the food, so that hopefully we don't have quite as much as we had last year :)

If you are interested in attending, please let us know, either by signing up on the sheet in the  Club or by contacting John or Maggie. You don't have to enter the pairs competition, there will be plenty of time for informal bowling, or for your friends and family to give it a try, but we would love you to come along and enjoy the day.
